OSM R&D capabilities
1. R&D Centres
Dongguan OSM Product Development Centre
Focus on engineered soft goods.
Huizhou OSM Product Development Centre
Focus on electronics, acoustics, firmware and related technology
Stockholm OSM Product Development Centre
Focus on DSP development, systems architecture, ANC, and advanced electronics and software.
2. Mechanical Engineering
We have experience from small complicated items such as true wireless headphones to explosion proof industrial electronics.
Design for manufacturing is embedded in the work and our mechanical engineers work closely with production engineering to ensure that the product does not only meet customer requirements but can also be manufactured.
3. Acoustic and ANC
We have been doing acoustic engineering and ANC for a long time. Of course we have a full suite of audio measurement and development equipment, simulation software etc. But more importantly we know how to use it and we know from experience what works and what to keep in mind.
We work with partners to develop the appropriate speaker drivers and our team of engineers work together to bring acoustic engineering, mechanical engineers, electronics and DSP together as a cohesive team to deliver optimal acoustics.
We have experience with ANC (FF, FB, Hybrid, Analog and Digital) as well as hear-through, custom filtering, DSP development, VOX buffering and much more.
4. RF & Antenna design
With experience from both analog and digital UHV and VHF transceiver AM/FM/DAB receivers as well as Bluetooth, BLE, GPS, WiFi, BT, LoRA etc we can help you with your design and get it right from the start and make sure performance is good and to pass all regulatory and IOP testing.
5. Analog, digital and mixed mode electronics
In addition to CAD software we also have advanced simulations tools and fully equipped test and measurement labs for efficient development.
6. SW, FW, DSP Programming
Our software development department can handle complex real-time embedded development and DSP development and ML projects as well as more conventional platforms.
Working with modern tools and automated build and unit testing methods to validate code and complex dependencies and real time systems to build robust products.
7. IS, ATEX and harsh environments
Products should last and be safe to use!
We are experienced in developing products for tough environments and usage. This includes highest ATEX/IS classification for transceivers and battery packs. But also more conventional IPx requirements for durable sports consumer products.
8. Material development and sourcing
We work together with certified partners sourcing raw materials and components for unique design; or finished goods that we customize per client requirements.
We can both develop and source materials that perform, while meeting requirements in cost and appearance.
Sustainability is always on our mind and we have a raw material sustainable focus with a dedicated approved vendor list.
MATERIALS
Textiles, leather, PU, TPU, webbing etc.
Customizable CMF to client request.
HARDWARE
Hooks, rings, zippers etc.
We can source existing hardware or customize tooling to client request.
FINISHED GOODS
Small electronics and components, etc.
Customize color, print to client request.
9. Cut and sew
Cut & sew is the traditional assembly of soft goods, spanning across multiple industries from outdoor, industrial and tech to luxury. Many brands have embraced different stitch techniques, allowing the thread to become part of their brand DNA.
We specialize in different types of stitch, piping treatments, and bag closures from zipper to magnets and hardware.
OSM designs and makes all cut & sew samples in-house according to customer brief, utilizing a variety of sewing machines.
10. Forming
Forming of materials takes place when one or more materials are laminated together (laminated) in sheet form and compressed in a mould (typically two plates of metal that have been machined to create a cavity and core).
Once pressed by means of heat from the mould or to the material (pre forming), or both, results in a form that resembles the mould, albeit represented by the materials pressed.
EVA forming, Heat formed laminates (other than EVA).
EVA
Low to high volume. Low tooling investment.
Simple form factor, with edges that typically need to be concealed to hide the layers of material. Low recycling ability when laminated with other materials due to adhesives used.
LAMINATE FORMING
Low to high volume, although depends on form factor
Softer forms than EVA achieved. Create forms with more undercut due to flexibility.
11. Wrapping
Consumer electronics wrapping now trending thanks largely to companies such as Microsoft, Google, HP & Amazon. Users want tech in their lives but with less of an obvious appearance of being technology.
Discreet home appliances, controls, computing etc will have a higher demand to be wrapped as major brands become more accepting of launching products that both challenge perceptions and meet future users demands for less obvious tech.
Product wrapping is possible on many forms, but this is highly dependent upon the material choice and appropriateness to form.
OSM has developed a range of forms (some with functions such as Qi charger, headphones, speaker) matched with the most suitable material to demonstrate the unique properties of each and help customers understand possibilities and limitations.
12. Heat press bonding
Heat or hot melt bonding is a popular method of bonding for a seamless look in textiles and leather products manufacturing. This is accomplished by use of hotmelt films and it’s suitable for most textiles and leathers.
OSM has extensive experience in heat lamination and pressing. Developing unique solutions for world renowned brands to create one-of-a-kind products which surpass customers requirements and expectations.
13. High frequency welding
High Frequency (HF) is a popular manufacturing method for watertight construction.
The process uses coated (TPU) fabrics by heating up the material on the inside using high-frequency electromagnetic energy to fuse the two materials together (the materials must be coated with TPU); suitable materials are nylons, polyesters, with an increasing use of recycled materials.
OSM has developed highly complex hybrid solutions to bond molded plastics to TPU coated fabrics and all requisite machines and tooling for assembly.
We can also work with upgrade existing designs that require an uplift. Our advanced development lab applies fail-fast learning for greater efficiency.
